Strawberries may be good for your mind

What comes to mind first when you think of brain food? If you’ve been eating your blueberries, it’s, well, blueberries. But research from Tufts may convince you to make room for strawberries as an up-and-coming brain booster.

Strawberry-supplemented diets were found to slow and even reverse age-related brain decline in rats. Cornell University researchers also found that in rats a strawberry phytochemical called quercetin may prevent Alzheimer’s by protecting brain cells from oxidation.

Lab studies have shown that strawberries may protect against heart disease and cancer. Their  status comes from a powerful nutrient lineup: vitamin C, manganese and folate (for lower levels of homocysteine, which is linked to heart disease), fiber and phytochemicals such as ellagic acid, anthocyanins and quercetin; all this nutrition with only 45 calories in an eight strawberry serving. Now that’s something to talk about!
